Actual Text:
Sunday 21st of December Dear all Glad the first box of goodies arrived safely – did you find David’s watch in the pocket of the jacket – you make no mention of it in your letter. Fancy the knickers being too small for Elizabeth – shows you how out of touch I am, they were very expensive knickers, 10p a pair. There is another 10 towels to come in the Chitty box. I expect there will be a gap in the mail for several days as we have only one aircraft staying at Christmas as a search and rescue aircraft – if you remember our aircraft was the first into Darwin with medical supplies last Christmas time. We are now on 24 hours on 24 hours of shifts now as we have lost a lot of men but still have lots of aircraft, still! They all stop in a couple of days time. Tonight I am on a shift and the last Britannia aircraft comes through (they are getting rid of them due to the defence cuts) and there will be a little ceremony, exchanging plaques, photographs et cetera. Lots of people getting in the way as I’m trying to service the aircraft. The weather is still hot and wet and I hope it clears up for Christmas because the group captain has given his blessing on this trip to the next atoll on the basis of it being called in Ornithological Field Study! I am the only one going out of 10 who is interested in birds so they call themselves the ‘ornithological field study support group’– all a big fiddle to get off here for Christmas. We are just waiting for clearance from the Maldivian government now. Did I tell you that we now have an osprey on the island. My love to you all – not long now daddy
