Actual Text:
This indenture witnesseth that Erskine Piper Mayfield in the County of Sussex, son of George Piper the same place of his own free will and accord, and by and with the consent and approbation of his father testified by his executing these presents, doth put himself apprentice to Mrs William Brook and Crandall of cheating stun in the County of Kent, grocers and drapers to learn the art, trade, or business of Grosser and Draper and with him after the manner of an apprentice to serve from the fourth day of March 1868 being the day of the date hereof until the full end and term of four years from thence next following, fully to be complete and ended on the fourth day of March 1872. New paragraph during which term the said apprenticeship is master faithfully shall serve the secret to keep and their lawful commands obey: you shall do no damage to said master or they goods, nor suffer it to be done by others, but shall forthwith give notice to his said masters of the same, when necessary: he shall not waste a good service said masters, nor lend them unlawfully to any; nor shall he do any act whereby said master may sustain any loss, with his own goods or others during the said term without licence he said master; he shall neither buy nor sell during his apprenticeship: Shelley up sent himself from said master service day or night unlawfully: but in all things is a fatal printer shall behave himself towards his master and others during the said term. And the said Mrs Brook and Crandall for and in consideration of the services of the said Erskine Piper during the said term and also in consideration of the sum of £29 to them the said Mrs Brook and Crandall paid by the said George Piper the father at the execution of these must presence the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged doth hereby covenant promise and agree to and with the said George Piper’s executors and administrators that they said Mrs Brook and Crandall there said apprentice in the art, trade, or business of Grosser Draper which they use by the best means in their power shall teach and instruct or cause to be taught and instructed; the said Erskine Piper. Finding unto the said apprentice good and sufficient meat drink lodging and all other necessities to the said term and also hereby by further agrees to allow and to pay there said apprentice the sum of £10 at the expiration the last year of the term of his said apprenticeship and the said George Piper doth hereby for himself is executors and administrators promise and agreed to find a provide for his said son Erskine sufficient we wearing apparel all kinds suitable for his station in life and washing and mending the same with medical and surgical advice and assistance and medicines when required during the said term. And should the aforesaid Erskine Piper happened to tie before the fourth day of March 1870 aforesaid messes Brook Crandall agreed to refund all the aforesaid to the aforesaid George Piper one unreadable of the premium now already paid and for the true performance of all and every of said covenants and agreements set parties by themselves bodies presence.
