Actual Text:
BLOW TO EAST KENT HOCKEY CIRCLES SUDDEN DEATH OF MR. J. A. DANN Hockey circles in Canterbury and East Kent have suffered a big loss by the sudden death, which occurred on Friday of Mr. John Albert Dann, of 100, Northwood Road, Whitstable, at the age of 73 years. For many years Mr. Dann took a keen interest in hockey and his association with the Canterbury Hockey Club was a long and happy one. He was a tower of strength during the difficult years after the war and his active interest and enthusiasm was a great encouragement in the struggle to put the Club on its feet. In 1949 he was elected chairman of the Club and from then onwards, under his wise guidance, progress was made and he contributed in no small degree to the present flourishing state of the Club. His regular support of the Canterbury Club made him known throughout East Kent and he was well loved and respected by all who knew him. So much so, that when the new East Kent Division of the Kent County Hockey Association was formed last year, Mr. Dann was invited to be its first chairman and he gladly undertook this further task. Mr. Dann was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Dann, of Brenchley, Kent. During the first world war he was a despatch rider and he served in the Royal Observer Corps in World War II. He was interested in all sport besides hockey, especially cricket. His hobby was gardening and he was well-known in Whitstable as an amateur dahlia grower. A manufacturers agent, Mr. Dann retired in 1957, though he assisted Mrs. Dann in her business which she curried on in Albert Street. Much sympathy has been extended to Mrs. Dann in her bereavement. The funeral took place on Tuesday at Brenchley, the Vicar of St. Mary's. Chilham, the Rev. Sir Reginald Champion officiating.
