Actual Text:	Her Majesty's Royal Sappers and Mminers Whereof Field Marshall the right honourable Henry Viscount Harding KGB is Col battalion or Corps Royal Sappers and miners, Chatham 29th of April 1856. Proceedings of a regimental board, held this day, in conformity to the articles of war, for the purposes of verifying and recording the services, conduct, character, and cause of discharge of Sgt James Moate number 1388 of the regiment above mentioned. The board having examined and compared the regimental records, the soldiers book, and such other documents as appeared to them to be necessary, report that Sgt James Moate by trade a bricklayer was born in the parish of Starcross in or near the town of Exeter in the county of Devon and was attested for the Corps of Royal Sappers and Miners at Woolwich in the County of Kent on 20 December 1830 at the age of 14 years that after making every deduction required by her Majesty's regulations, the service up to 13th of May 1856 which he is entitled to reckon, amounts to 21 years 147 days, as shown by the detailed statement on the second page; during which period he served abroad 12 years, viz: at Gibraltar: six years, 11 months in Bermuda: five years, one month And further, that his discharge was proposed in consequence of chronic rheumatism. With regard to the character and conduct of Sgt James Moate the board have to report, that upon reference to the defaulters book, and by the parole testimony that has been given, it appears that he has never been tried by court-martial and that his general conduct has been very good. Sgt James Moate being asked to what date he has been paid answered that his account is balanced up to the latest period required by the regulations; and being further asked whether he has any claim on the regiment for arrears of pay, allowances, or clothing, answered, that he has received all just demands, from his entry into the service up to 13 May 1856 and in confirmation therefore, fixes his signature hereto. I acknowledge this to be true (signed or his mark) The board have ascertained that Sgt James Moate's soldier's book is correctly balanced, and signed by the office commanding his company, and they declare, that they have impartially enquired into, and faithfully reported upon all the matters brought before them, in accordance with the regulations and instructions issued by her Majesty's orders. Detailed statement of the services of Sgt James Moate number 1388. Regiment Royal Sappers and Miners Rank: boy untrained, from 18th of December 1830 to 17th of December 1834. Amount of service nil. Rank: Private, from 18th of December 1834 to 10th of October 1843. Amount of service eight years 297 days. Rank: second Cpl, from 11th of October 1843 to 31st of March 1846. Amount of service two years 172 days. Rank: Cpl, from first of April 1846 to 11 April 1848. Amount of service two years 11 days. Rank: Sgt, from 12th of April 1848 to 13th of May 1856. Amount of service eight years 32 days. Total of the foregoing statement amount service 21 years, hundred and 47 days Medical report. Chronic rheumatism. Has been subject to rheumatic pains in his back and shoulders for the last seven years. First bought on by getting wet whilst employed on the banks at St George's Bermuda. They are much affected by changeable weather. This main disability caused by his bricklaying unreadable Opinion of the principal medical officer, at Chatham 24th of April 1856 after an examination Sgt Moate I am of the opinion that he is unfit further service signature.
