Actual Text:	CONFIDENTIAL The Elms School, London Road, Maidstone. COMMUNICATION TO PARENTS. As you are probably aware, I have not been able to undertake much active teaching for some months past owing to indifferent health and increasing age. I have carried on the work here beyond the normal retiring age for schoolmasters and it is with great regret that I have reached the decision to make my retirement permanent. For some long period past I have been endeavouring to ?nd someone willing and able to carry on the administration and the educational work of the school but so far without success. In consequence unless the unexpected happens the school will be compelled to close at the end of the summer term. Under the title of The Commercial School and later as The Elms, the school has been functioning in Mr W. J. McCabe. A certain measure of success has attended our efforts and for that reason I am now seeking to make suitable arrangements for the continuity of the education of the boys under the age of I6 years. A further letter will be sent individually to parents with suggestions. We are well aware that this school has occupied a unique position in the local educational pattern and that parents may experience dif?culty in ?nding another school able to produce results that have been as successful as our own for examination passes in the more academic subjects at Q level. Negotiations are proceeding having regard to the age, ability and geographical location of their homes, for boys to be placed in schools which can offer a reasonable chance of passing G.C.E. in an adequate number of subjects when the time comes. I cannot close this letter without expressing my own sincere and personal thanks for the very loyal co-operation and support of the very many parents and friends of both present and past pupils of the school. There are many important decisions which still need to be taken but it is hoped that these can be achieved without undue hardship or dislocation. HENRY I. PIPER (Headmaster). 10th March, I961
