Actual Text:
27th of August 1975 Dear all I’ve just received your letter from the Isle of Barra after receiving a later letter the other day – it’s all very confusing. I am sorry to hear that your accommodation on Barra was dilapidated and dirty – not very nice, your description of your experiences indicate that the house you stayed in was a ‘fowl’ place (sorry about that). Still it was perhaps a change and they do say that the change is as good as a rest. I have lots of work on at the moment with lots of aircraft coming and going as well as I have 15 or so confidential reports to write on the lads I have under me – it’s not as easy as I have to be honest as well as being fair, especially if the report is for one of my sergeants who is ready for his chief tech my report could make a difference to his promotion. I find that it takes me about three hours to write one of these reports so you can see that I’m burning the midnight oil of late. Give Elizabeth a big kiss from me for the lovely drawing received – I think, looking at her drawing of an aeroplane, that she may design some super jet liner when she grows up. I have her artwork up on the walls and they flutter and rustle day and night in the draft of the fan, I must do something about that as the rustling keeps me awake at night – I must get more drawing pins. We are going through another period of rain and it was very strange going to work the other morning amid columns of steam coming from the roads. I’ve decided to put this letter in an envelope then I can send the postcards I got in Kandy, remember I wrote about the elephant bath, snake man, dancers and the temple I visited – these are them. The quality of the postcards is not up to much – just like the poorer parts of the country. Well that’s it for now. My love to you all Daddy
