colllnionnor From: Cliff Rogers [oerogers@btintemetoom] Sent: 02 September 2006 13:45 To: oollinjenner?supanetoom Cc: Leach Mike Subject: Constable Moan. Hello Colin, I am afraid that I cannot add anything further to Barry's comments, The title British South Africa Police was used from 1896 to 1980, it was the police force for Southern Rhodesia. The short time that Constable Moate was in the police almost certainly meant he was still in depot under training. The normal period of training being five months, however this was shortened on occasions so I cannot be sure. It is possible the incident that caused death occurred in the then Salisbury,(Harare). We have a regimental journal which in many cases publishes obituaries of persons that died in service but Moate does not appear on the index. If you wanted to you could hire a local researcher to look at Moate's papers which would exist but they would not tell you much. Another source would be papers related to the inquest . Regards, Cliff Rogers. 1 colllnlonner From: Clifl Rogers [cero9ers@btintemetoom] Sent: 02 September 2006 19:46 To: oollinjenner Subject: Re: Constable Moate. Hello Colin, Your questions are not easy for me to answer, the one on inquests, I would imagine that the records are still available but you would need the assistance of a local researcher. Enquiring from outside Zimbabwe is a non starter, they have a very defensive mentality about divulging the most mundane material. One possibility, do you reside in or near London ?, the British Library Newspapers Collection at Colindale may have copies of the Rhodesia Hereld for the period and that may have an entry. The date given for the end of his service was 8th April 1949 so a search for a few weeks after that may reveal something. No guarantees. On where he would be serving, if still in training he would have been located in the Training Depot in Salisbury (Harare). Each man would have had his own rifle and ammunition was plentiful, I myself always had a spare 50 rounds for personal use, shooting game for the pot, etc. Did Moate have previous military training, how old was he when he died. These would be factors to be taken into consideration. The training was no walk over and some people could no hack it.If someone was lonely or had a history of depression, etc, it would be easy to end things. But we are junping ahead here it could have been an accidental discharge of a firearm tha caused his death.. Sorry I cannot be more useful to you. Regards, Cliff Rogers. 1
