Barneville-Carteret, France
Dear Colin
We live in Normandy and, at this moment in time, are snowed in and anxiously awaiting news from our son and daughter who hope to join us tomorrow – if they can get to Portsmouth and if I can get to Cherbourg. So, to take my mind off the weather and, more important, Lord Sugar and The Apprentice, I will start filling in some of the blanks on your tree. Obviously, my main concern is for the name Eldridge and can take Hannah back to 1651, but will start with her father James. I have precise dates although, before 1837 these are dates of baptisms and burials, but I will be brief.
James Eldridge 1801 – 1866 son of John and Catherine
He married, in 1823, Dinah Dann 1796 – 1831, daughter of Thomas and Jane
(Interestingly, Dinah brother – Sergeant Dann – was at the Battle of Waterloo)
James and Dinah had four children:
Hannah 1824 – 1891 (see more below)
Caroline 1826 – 1907
Lucy 1829 – 1906
George 1830 – 1880
After Dinah died James remarried, in 1832, Francis Goldsmith 1797 – 1882 daughter of Thomas and Susannah.
James and Francis had three children:
John 1835 – 1916
Ann 1836 – 1836
Frederick 1837 – 1907
Hannah Eldridge 1824 – 1891 married George Piper 1816 – 1886 in 1849 in Lewes. Our death dates for Hannah obviously differ. It is so long ago that I did my research for this period but I was certain Hannah stayed in Mayfield all her life and died there in 1891. Do you have a copy of the death certificate?
George and Hannah had four children:
Brucer 1850 –
Erskin 1853 –
Dinah Grace 1853 –
Alfred 1860 –
Perhaps also of interest is the fact that James Eldridge had an older sister Ann Eldridge (baptised Mayfield 25th December 1794) who married William Piper on 2nd January 1815 in Mayfield. He was a shoemaker and they had seven children: Sarah 1815, twins John and Elizabeth 1824, Harriet 1826, George 1828, Ann 1829 and Ruth 1836. Were William and George related I wonder.
I do hope the above is of interest and useful
Kind regards and a Merry Christmas
