The school was founded in May 1901 by Mr. William J. McCabe in Brewer Street and was named the Commercial School.
It moved to Bodman House in London Road in 1908 and then, in September 1936, it moved to the Elms, London Road, together with the Mount Pleasant Preparatory School.
It was renamed The Elms School circa 1943. As a temporary measure girls were accepted during the war period and additional accommodation was erected.
In 1954 St. Nicholas Preparatory School (which had opened in 1930 in premises in Grace Avenue) was incorporated with The Elms and catered for children in the primary stage, with The Elms catering exclusively for the secondary stage.
The two schools closed on 21st July 1961.
