| 507 | In the 1841 census, William describes himself as a Publican and Farmer. He is married to Ann, who is 10 years older than him. He says he is then 50 but this may be wrong since he later claims to be older than that. He states that he was born in Tackley in Oxon, but she says she was born elsewhere. Living in the same house, which is not named, are Harriet Gregory, his niece, aged 40, and her two children, Amelia aged 18 and Joseph, aged 13 years. Harriet was born in Thame, Oxon, but Amelia and Joseph were born elsewhere Ref: HO 107 890 In the 1851 Census, William is 64 years old and is described as a Farmer of 180 acres employing 9 labourers. He is married to Ann who is 11 years older than him. They appear to live in 'the New Lane near the Wood', in Tackley. In the same household are living no children but a niece, Harriet Gregory, who is 50 years old and a nephew, Joseph Gregory, who is 22 years old. Harriet was born in Thame, Oxfordshire, but Joseph was born in Dartford or Deptford in Kent. There are also servants living with the family: John Cripps is 19 years old and was born in Hanborough in Oxon. William Prickett is 19 years old and was born in Tackley. Joseph Prickett is 17 years old and was born in Tackley. Ref: 10107 1730 (81-E) By 1861, William is 74 years old and has retired from work. His wife, Ann, is still alive, aged 86 years, which seems incredible for that period. They are living (can't read the address) with Joseph who is now the head of the family, but has not yet married. He is 32 years old. His mother is with them, aged 60 now. Joseph is a victualler. Also living with the family is Valentine Hoare as a lodger, working as an agricultural labourer. He is aged 40 years, and seems to have been the son of Johanna Hoare, who was related somehow to Mary Ann, the wife of William Edginton. Relationship: Illegitimate for 1 FAMC Family of TUCKWELL & Mary EDGINTON | Edginton, William Tuckwell (I1306)

| 540 | Isleham: a medieval inland port Although the importance of waterborne transport in the Middle Ages has recently become more controversial, its significance in the Cambridgeshire fens has received little detailed attention. This study of Isleham, on the north-eastern Cambridgeshire fen-edge, emphasises the primary role of communications by water in this region and takes earlier work a step further by showing how the form of fen-edge settlement is wholly oriented to the availability of waterways for transport, trade and communication. | Source (S3438)

| 541 | It appears that Thirza married a George Radmore in 1857, in Plomesgate in Suffolk. They apparently (according to Ron Adams) moved around a lot, and they were back in the London area 1858, 1863, 1867, 1872 shot up to Yorkshire 1876 and back to Warlingham for 1881. Thirza's death certificate states that she lived in Caterham and died in Godstone when she was 64 years old. She was the wife of George who was then a tobacconist and stationer. She died from cerebral haemorrhage and cardiac failure. Her death was registered on the 18th February, 1904 by R Radmore her son. To date (2005) I have no record of a R.Radmore. George's family stayed in Surrey, but he ended up in Wales, being looked after by one of the younger members of the family. | Edginton, Thirza (I1290)

| 545 | Jane appears to have met and married Thomas when she was only 16 years old and he wasn't much older. Thomas was the eldest son of a large family whose father, Samuel, worked as a Blacksmith. One of his sisters, Elizabeth, was a straw bonnet maker when she was only 14. This is recorded in the 1851 census. Thomas himself worked as an Iron Roller then, aged 16. The young couple wed in 1852 and there was soon born the first of many children. By 1861 they were still living at Park St. Brierly Hill in Kingswinford in Staffordshire and they had 3 children. Thomas was now working as a labourer. In 1871 Jane appears to be living at 6, Queen Anne St in Christchurch in Southwark, which is in the Parish of St.Saviours, and describes herself as the Head of the family. She has 5 of her children living with her, the youngest being John, who was only a few months old. There is a real possibility that two of her little boys died here, John , only a few months old and Thomas, who was 5. She also seems to have had another child she called thomas later in the seventies, 1878. She described herself as a Charwoman, and there is no mention of her husband. I did assume she was then a widow but in 1881she is to be found in Poplar, living at 69, Culloden St, which is fairly amazing, since it was so close to where I was born. Thomas is there too, described as an Engine Driver, and Jane says she is a Dressmaker. There are still more children, the youngest now being Lillia, who was then one year old. In 1891 it seems she was indeed widowed, and is described as such. She is working as a Housekeeper to a Mr Hill, and has Evelyn, Thomas and Lydia Rose with her. The address is Clifton House, Erith near abbey Villas. By 1901 she is 64 years old and living at 4, Upper Abbey St, in Erith, in the Parish of All Saints. She has her 23 year old son, Thomas with her, who is working as a labourer, and there is a 5 year old grandson called William Sutton. I do not yet know whose child this is. | Edginton, Jane (I1286)
