Notes - From the Tackley fiche from Brian Stringer it says that William married Mary on the 21st December, 1829, with witnesses Thomas Harris and Elizabeth Jennings. The Banns were read on 6, 13, and 20th December. In the 1841 census, William is 30 and Mary is 25. He is described as a shopkeeper, and they have 5 children, Thirza being the youngest at 8 months old. All the family were stated to have been born in Tackley in Oxon. Tackley is obviously the Tickley and the Tuckley mentioned in later censuses; the village is just north of Oxford. In the 1851 Census, William is still married to Mary and they are both living in Tackley in Oxfordshire. The address seems to be something like 22, Nethercott. They say they were both born in Tackley. He was then 40 years old and she was 38 years old, although she could have been either two years older or younger, according to other statistics. His occupation is recorded as being a Carrier, as was his eldest son William, then aged 19 years. They had a large number of children: William was 19, Ann was 17, Jane was 15, Sarah was 12, Thirza was 9, Lydia was 7, Docrinda was 5, John was 3 and the baby Henry was 1. By the 1861 census, it appears that William and Mary had left the village, and there is no record there of the family in 1871. Indeed Lavinia was born in 1853 in Stafford, according to the 1881 census. Her birthplace is also recorded as being in Hereford (Mar.1853.Hereford 6a 433-family record centre). His occupation in 1881 is described as an agricultural labourer, but he is living in The Rose and Crown pub in Kenley, Coulsdon, with his wife, Mary. They have living with them an unmarried daughter called Lavinia, who is 28 years old and a dressmaker. Also living with them are grandchildren, Henry, aged 15 years (my Grandfather), and Sarah, aged 11 years. Henry is described as a shopboy.

[1] Notes - Mary died aged 34 years in Edmonton, leaving a number of young children. She died of Phthisis Pulmonalis, which is a form of TB. Her death was formally witnessed by Eliza Gillann, a neighbour who lived at 12, White Hall Street in Edmonton. The certificate says her husband was William and that he was a wheelwright, which seems odd, but I am fairly certain that this lady was my great great grandmother. [1]

Notes - William may have been named Henry William when he was born on May 1, 1831, in Tackley. In the 1851 Census, William is 19 years old and living at home in Tackley with his parents and siblings. He is described as working as a Carriers son ? He met and married Mary Chadwick in Holmer in Herefordshire, where the family went, presumably for working on the railways. The witnesses to their marriage were Thomas and Ann King, who may have married a month or so before them in the same parish. This Ann was probably his slightly older sister, and she may well have known her husband some time as it seems possible that he was also born in Tackley or Kirtlington, the next village to Tackley. On the certificate William is described as a Haffslider or a Staffslider, of which I have yet to discover the meaning. His father William was a labourer at the time of the marriage. When Henry was born in 1866, his father was named as being William and he was described as a Railway Labourer. He and his wife, Mary, lived at 3, Nursery Rd, Brickston at that time. On Henry and Mary Jane's marriage certificate in 1888, William is described as a Joiner. On Sarah Ann's birth certificate in 1869, he is described as a Labourer at the gas-works. William lived with his sister Thirza and her family in Huts near Kingswood Station in 1881. He had left Henry and Sarah with their grandparents, for what reason I do not yet know. Mary may have either died or left the family. William died of Cerebral Apoplexy, in the presence of his niece, E.White. I have yet to discover whose daughter this was. On his death certificate he is described as a Carpenter, Journeyman.
