Notes - From the Tackley fiche from Brian Stringer it says that William married Mary on the 21st December, 1829, with witnesses Thomas Harris and Elizabeth Jennings. The Banns were read on 6, 13, and 20th December. In the 1841 census, William is 30 and Mary is 25. He is described as a shopkeeper, and they have 5 children, Thirza being the youngest at 8 months old. All the family were stated to have been born in Tackley in Oxon. Tackley is obviously the Tickley and the Tuckley mentioned in later censuses; the village is just north of Oxford. In the 1851 Census, William is still married to Mary and they are both living in Tackley in Oxfordshire. The address seems to be something like 22, Nethercott. They say they were both born in Tackley. He was then 40 years old and she was 38 years old, although she could have been either two years older or younger, according to other statistics. His occupation is recorded as being a Carrier, as was his eldest son William, then aged 19 years. They had a large number of children: William was 19, Ann was 17, Jane was 15, Sarah was 12, Thirza was 9, Lydia was 7, Docrinda was 5, John was 3 and the baby Henry was 1. By the 1861 census, it appears that William and Mary had left the village, and there is no record there of the family in 1871. Indeed Lavinia was born in 1853 in Stafford, according to the 1881 census. Her birthplace is also recorded as being in Hereford (Mar.1853.Hereford 6a 433-family record centre). His occupation in 1881 is described as an agricultural labourer, but he is living in The Rose and Crown pub in Kenley, Coulsdon, with his wife, Mary. They have living with them an unmarried daughter called Lavinia, who is 28 years old and a dressmaker. Also living with them are grandchildren, Henry, aged 15 years (my Grandfather), and Sarah, aged 11 years. Henry is described as a shopboy.

Enoch Mallen, b. 1847, Dudley, Staffordshire, England
[1]Marriage 12 Nov 1865 The Parish Church, Christchurch, Surrey, England
[1] Notes - When Enoch and Derenda were married in 1865, he was working as an Engine Driver. They both gave their address as Blackfriars Road, and Derenda had not only changed the spelling of her name, but had put two g's in William, her father's name. Enoch's father , Samuel, was dead. Their witnesses appear to have been related to Enoch, being Thomas and Jane Mallen. [1]

Notes - There is no record of the Mallen family in the 1871 census, which is a great pity. Dorinda became Derenda when she wed Enoch, but the puzzing thing is that she seems to have called herself Ellen by the time of the 1881 census, when she and Enoch were living in West Wickham, in the High Street. They had a son, Henry, who was then nearly 12 years old, having been born in 1869. Enoch was working as an Engineer, and 'Ellen' was not working. The next appearanc seems to be Drenda Mallen's death in the March Q of 1887. She died in Romford, Essex. It may not be a relation, but there is also the death of a baby of less than a year old, called Drenda Agnes Mallen in 1872 in West Ham. It is such an unusual name that it may well have been Dorinda's daughter. I may get this certificate later. Enoch seems to have remarried in the September Q of 1887, barely 6 months after his wife's death. He married Alice Dover, who was 10 years younger than he, in Romford, Essex. By the time of the 1891 census, he and Alice were living in West Ham, and he was still working as an Engine driver. The census shows that there were 4 children living with them, but whose were Derenda's and whose were Alice's remains to be seen. Harry, Derenda's son was still living with the family, aged 25 years. He was then a fireman. Earnest, 15 years old, was probably Dorinda's son, and Amy, 11 years old, her daughter, and Alice and Enoch had 3 year old Alice D. By 1901 the family had grown again.
