The Commercial School, 15 Brewer Street, Maidstone, Kent, England
Notes:
The school was founded in May 1901 by Mr William J McCabe in Brewer Street and was named the Commercial School.
It moved to Bodman House in London Road in 1908 and then, in September 1936, it moved to the Elms, London Road, together with the Mount Pleasant Preparatory School. It was renamed and additional accommodation was erected. In 1954 St Nicholas Preparatory School (which had opened in 1930 in premises in Grave Avenue) was incorporated with the Elms and catered for children in the primary stage, with the Elms catering exclusively for the secondary stage. The two schools closed on 21 July 1961.
MAIDSTONE COMMERCIAL SCHOOL WITH PREPARATORY DEPARTMENT, THE ELMS, LONDON ROAD, MAIDSTONE.
The Maidstone Commercial School was established in May 1901 by the late W. J. McCabe, Esq., in premises in Brewer Street. It was transferred 10 years later to a more central position at 8 London Road. In September 1930 Mr. McCabe died after a short illness, and the control of the school was undertaken by the present Principal. In 1931 the Old Boys' Association was re formed and the school accommodation was enlarged. A Preparatory School was opened in conjunction with it in 1934 in Loose Road, and the whole of the London Road premises was devoted to school purposes. The necessity for still more accommodation and larger playing ground compelled the transfer in September 1936 to the Elms Estate where the spacious premises and ideal surroundings afford a wonderful opportunity for a thorough education in a suitable environment.
