Dear daddy
Thank you for your letter. I am replying at once for fear I shall not have another chance for some time as we have many activities on the go.
First I have sent my address, that is the banks address, to Laurie Milbank and am waiting a reply – this was about two months ago.
Ian has joined The Buffs and attends their lodge on camp they all seem a nice jovial crowd and we know many of them.
Re-the teaching of pupils – I have not yet received a work permit, applied for over a month ago – either they will not grant me one or else the postman (ha ha) has thrown it in the garden, as is the usual mode of delivery for such documents, and the wind has blown it away. I think I shall revisit the police station and enquire. Yes I had in mind little Texan girl kind of thing. Kids about 7 to 10 years. Spelling, reading et cetera.
I think it is a rotten shame about The Elms and I expect others do as well. It would have been nice to carry on as a school.
Thank you for David's gift. Ian loves it. David took it to the bath with him and drowned it, so it is in hospital at present awaiting a new plug! Anyway, he hugs it and laughs at it. I hope to give a party for him on May 29 all being well. He is now picking up several words, and seems bright. His appreciation of music is astounding. He always sings and dances to any quick music such as Scots or Irish dancing music or rock 'n' roll. He amuses the lads at the Roundel RAF Club by dancing and singing to the jukebox. He is still abundantly fat. We are getting some colour photos of him soon. He enjoys pushing himself along on his tricycle (left to us by friends on return to UK) and puts a plastic gearstick onto it which he uses and says "Beb-Beb". He has learned this from watching Ian drive, so he's all there. He screams blue murder at bedtime!
Is Trotsky emigrating to Sussex with you?
Our Mif caught a young flamingo, at least, bought it to the door, recently. A lovely creature it was. Today he ate a large grasshopper as big as a mouse.
I shall send you a copy of 'Out and About' soon with my photo in it at the first birthday party, but I don't have any large envelopes at present. We had quite a nice little celebration but a bit on the swanky side.
I am now official scorer for 103 Squadron, we had our first game on Tuesday (lost it) against the RAF police. I thoroughly enjoyed scoring again. We play again on Friday. On Sunday we had a 'kebab' lunch on a beach. We took two chaps with us and had a swim. It was lovely, but we got burned. I put lotion on David, but not myself and am raw! It has been 92° so far so summer will soon be here.
Did I tell you I wrote round to several English county towns requesting local views for our magazine I heard from Maidstone the other day. As a matter of fact they sent the best guide of all. A lovely book all about Kent, but we are not allowed to reproduce photos so I'll have to write to the Kent messenger for some.
On Saturday Squadron are having a beach barbecue.
I wrote to Jesse recently and have got him a comical birthday card.
There was a killing last week in Kyrenia. An English man was shot but they think it is mistaken identity but you don't know – there's more in it than meets the eye. Passing through a village recently we saw them putting up a memorial plaque to Grivas us who is a native of this village although most of the people are friendly there are still a few hard-core EOKA and ENOSIS people left about (and of course the communists).
I met some UN troops on Monday at the dance. One Canadian among them – stationed at Garza and on leave. Very interesting but a bit secretive – I think he took me for a spy! They took a few snapshots of me which I shall never see anyway!
Our new padre starts on Sunday 21st. An Irishman.
Well I must right now to the County Hall and acknowledge the guide they sent. Love and regards to Lena
Flora
PS can you visit Cyprus this year? We met Nessie Haine last week who is on a grand tour of the Middle East. She is still the same but it was nice to see her again. |
