Dear all
Well! Here I am back at RAF Butlins (Gan) after a very nice stay in Hong Kong.
I still don’t know where to start – I saw the new territories right next Chinese border saw whole gangs of ‘reds’ working on the fields each group having a bright coloured flag flying – they looked human. We caught a ferry boat and went to the islands and saw a real Chinese temple. In Kaloon we went to an old walled town famous Tiger Balm gardens. In Hong Kong itself we walked and walked and saw life at its best and at its lowest.
It’s a funny place really, full of contradictions – for instance, we went into one skyscraper which had offices, shops and restaurants, very modern, very plush with lots of very well-dressed, modern Chinese working and enjoying themselves there yet behind this building was a festering shantytown – and this in the middle of the city. The pollution is awful, there is always a horrible smell of sulphur around and one part of the city is just visible through the smog from the other part.
I had some super meals there (makes Dereham take away quite sick) eating the most exotic things without knowing what it was I was eating. I have mastered the chopsticks and can even pick up peanuts with them – I have a few pairs which we can use when I get home.
I have purchased a few things – I’ll list them in my next letter mostly clothing, towels, sheets et cetera. All of them very cheap plea but unfortunately, I lost the pencil I had got for you. I shall try and post some items when and if I can get hold of some boxes. Whilst in Hong Kong I did receive two letters thanks.
The weather is pretty bad here, wind and rain. Write again tomorrow
Love to you all
