Thursday 11 December
Dear all
Well! All the goodies have been sent now the first box going by post and the second box was sent yesterday as a chitty box – no idea when that will arrive. Remember to unpack with care because of the children’s watches.
Not much happening here at the moment – lots of gash VIPs coming through so they can get to Hong Kong get all the Christmas presents on the cheap with the airfare being paid by the taxpayer. The weather stays very hot with the occasional rainstorm to liven things up, my nose and lip are peeling like mad, it’s a wonder that my body can produce skin that quickly.
I’m sorry to say that I’m not looking forward to Christmas as it looks as if we you will have no work to do for five or six days and there will be at nothing to do but drink and hang about. One bright prospect seems to be that I may get of the atoll for Christmas, a colleague is trying, with some success, to arrange a party of 20 or so to hire a boat and spend four days on the next atoll to the north out 60 miles away. They are, by all accounts, simple fisher people ‘uncontaminated’ by white people and it will mean us taking all our own food, water etc and going native for a simple Christmas – it would be like an expedition I suppose as we know for a fact that no other RAF people have ever been allowed to go to this atoll. I shall be going as the official ornithologist and bottle washer.
I’m told that this may be the last letter to arrive before Christmas so hope you and the children have a happy Christmas together, and only wish I could be with you all. My love to all and don’t forget I shall be phoning on the 24th 10 minutes to 2 in the afternoon.
Think of me
