Hawkhurst
MR. L J. PIPER
Louis James Piper, of Pine Cottage. Horns-road. Hawkhurst, who died in the Kent and Sussex hospital on Friday. moved to the village in 1897. He was 80.In 1924 be took over the grocery business of Alfred Piper from his father. Although he retired several years ago he continued to take an active interest in the business.Mr. Piper was born at Staplehurst and educated at Cranbrook school. where he has been followed by his son and now by his three grandsons. He served with the Machine Gun corps in India in World War I and was in the Home Guard in World War II. He was a keen member of Hawkhurst British Legion club. where he had won award, In billiards and snooker. He had been treasurer of the local Thomas Dunk' s charity for several years. Mr. Piper. a widower for nearly two years, leaves a son. Cremation was at Tunbridge Wells on Wednesday. |
