Gunner and Driver John Moat, born in the parish of Sheffield in or near the town of Sheffield in the County of York, by trade a cutler, attested for the Royal Regiment of Artillery at Woodthorpe in the County of York on 5 April 1813 at the age of 16 years.
First service. After the age of 18 years, which he is entitled to reckon up to 10th of January 1837, is 21 years 285 days the statement of which is as follows;
Royal Artillery. Rank: Gunner and Driver, from 2 April 1813 to 1 April 1815. Amount of service under age.
From 1 April 1815 to 10 January 1837, amount of service 21 years 285 days.

Second disability or calls of discharge. Injury of the loins and chronic rheumatism, as stated in the accompanying proceedings of a medical board dated 5 December 1836.
The board is of the opinion that his care is not attributable to neglect, design, vice or intemperance. With regards to the injury stated to have been received in the medical report, no document produced to the board to corroborate the same.
Third character. The regimental board is of opinion that his character is very good.

Opinion of the principal medical officer at Woolwich 21 December 1836.
After careful examination I am of opinion that John Mote is unfit for service, and likely to be permanently disqualified for military party.

Description of gunner and driver John Mote at the time of his discharge. He is 39 years of age, 5'6" in height, brown hair, grey eyes, dark complexion. By trade a Cutler. When he left the Royal artillery captain unreadable name was the captain of his troop or company.

Eighth Battalion proceedings of the regimental board held in conformity to the articles of war, for the purpose of verifying and recording the services, conduct, character, cause of discharge of gunner and driver John Mote the Royal Regiment of Artillery, Woolwich 16th of December 1836 born in the parish of Sheffield, in or near the town of Sheffield in the County of York by trade Cutler.
Attested for the Royal Artillery at Woodthorpe County of York on 5 April 1813, at the age of 16 years.

Conduct and character. Very good. The officers composing the board, having examined the defaulters book, and received payroll testimony from Capt adjutant are Kendall finds that his name does not appear in the default book, and that his character is very good. Capt Kendall states that he has known him for upwards of three years during which his conduct and character has been very good.
Paying and clothing. Gunnar and driver John Mote being asked upon what period he's been paid, answer that is account balanced up to 10 January 1837 being further asked whether he has other claim on the regiment for arrears of pay, allowances or clothing, answered, that he has not.
The board have verified that a soldier's book is correctly balanced signed by the officer commanding his troop or company may further declare that they have impartially enquired into, faithfully reported their opinion on all matters brought before them in accordance with the regulations and instructions issued by his Majesty's orders signed unreadable signatures

Eighth Battalion
Gunner and Driver John Mote. Injury of his loin and chronic rheumatism.
The board having met and individually made to declaration directed by order of the master general and board of ordnance dated 27th of December 1833 proceeded to examine John Mote, and ascertained that about six years ago, when on stable duty at Woolwich, he was kicked by a horse in the loins, from the effects of which he has never entirely recovered. During the last four years he had also been affected with chronic rheumatism.
Present state. He suffers much from rheumatic pains, especially in his loins.
Opinion. The board of opinion that he is worn out and permanently unfit for military service, but able to contribute something towards his livelihood. Had not been in hospital at Woolwich. Signed unreadable signatures |
