Text H J Piper was a pupil at The Tonbridge Commercial School from May 1904 till Easter 1909. Entering the school as a ‘Free Tuition’ Scholar, through winning one of the scholarships offered for competition by the Governors – The Skinners Co of London, to boys attending at local elementary schools.
Subsequently he succeeded in obtaining an ‘Intending pupil teacher’ scholarship offered by Kent Education Committee, and finally a ‘Pupil Teacher’ scholarship which he held until the completion of his school course at Easter 1909.
I am pleased to say that his conduct and character throughout the whole of his school career were excellent, and his influence among other boys altogether satisfactory.
H I Piper was a pupil of remarkable intelligence. And this, coupled with his untiring industry and steady and judicious application to study, won for him a high position in the school and success in his examinations.
I anticipate for him a very honourable and successful career and shall be surprised if his abilities and steady and ? industry do not produce for him a future of distinction and usefulness.
Signed . William J D Bryant (Late headmaster of Sir A Judds Commercial School.
