This indenture witnesseth that Mary Jane Prall of Brenchley does put herself as improver to Hannah Wells of Brenchley, Kent to learn her art and with her after the manner of an improver to serve from the 15th day of January 1878 unto the full end and term of nine months thence next following to be fully complete and ended during which term the said apprentice her mistress faithfully shall serve her secrets and keep her lawful commands everywhere gladly do she shall do no damage to her said mistress nor see to be of others but to her power shall tell or forthwith give warning to her said mistress of the same she shall not waste the goods of her said mistress nor lend them unlawfully to any. She shall not commit fornication nor contract matrimony within the said term, shall not play cards or dice tables, or any other unlawful games whereby her said mistress may have any loss with her own goods or other during the said term without licence of her said mistress. She shall neither buy nor sell. She shall not haunt taverns or playhouses nor absent herself from her said mistress’s service day or night unlawfully but in all things as a faithful apprentice she shall behave herself towards her said mistress and all hers during the said term the said Hannah Wells her said apprentice in the art of dressmaking which she uses by the best means that she can shall teach and instruct or cause to be taught and instructed. And for the true performance of all and every the said covenants and agreements either of the said parties binder herself unto the others by these presents in witness whereof the parties above-named to these indentures interchanged by have put their hands and seals the ninth day of February and in the 39th year of the reign of our sovereign Lady Victoria by the grace of God by the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland Queen defender of the faith the year of our Lord 1878.
